Article: I can lose the fat, I just can't keep it off. What am I doing wrong?

I can lose the fat, I just can't keep it off. What am I doing wrong?

Most likely, the plan you lost it on was never built to keep it off. Strict diets work fast, then end with no plan for what comes next. Keeping it off takes food you can actually live with, muscle that keeps your metabolism working, and a next phase that builds on what you did.

You didn't fail the diet.

The diet had no second chapter.

Here's what the second chapter looks like.

Why does the weight keep coming back?

A lot of the women we talk to tell us the same story.

A very strict program. No sugar, no salt, barely any carbs. Ten thousand steps a day without fail.

And it worked.

Then they couldn't find their way back out of it. They couldn't live like that forever, and the moment they stopped, everything came back. Sometimes more.

Here's what usually goes wrong:

  • It was too strict to live with. Nobody eats like that through birthdays, vacations and a busy work season. When real life returns, the diet ends.
  • It cost you muscle. When you cut food hard, your body tends to give up muscle along with fat. Less muscle means a smaller engine, so the same food lands differently afterwards.
  • There was no exit plan. The program ended on a date. Nobody told you what to do on day one after.
  • The scale was the only goal. Once the number moved, there was nothing left to work toward.

None of that is a willpower problem.

Why does muscle matter so much for keeping it off?

Think of muscle as the engine that burns your fuel.

Keep the engine and the same meals keep working for you. Shrink the engine and the same meals start to stick.

That's why we build every plan around strength training and enough protein, from the very first week. Chris calls resistance training "the foundation and heartbeat" of everything we do.

Most women come to us wanting to lose weight. What they actually want to lose is fat, and keep their muscle while they do it.

What do women who keep it off do differently?

In our experience, a few things:

  • They eat in a way they'd keep anyway. No calorie counting, no food scales, and their favourite foods and wine nights stay in.
  • They keep strength training. The workouts don't stop when the scale moves.
  • They move into a next phase. A build phase, not a full stop.
  • They keep someone in their corner. A coach who notices when things start to slip, before the old habits creep back.

What comes after the fat loss phase?

This is the part most programs skip.

Chris explains it like this: after a fat loss phase, a lot of women get the next step wrong. They stay focused on losing, when what their body needs next is a build phase, where the focus shifts to strength and muscle.

Then, when you're ready, another fat loss phase. Build, then burn. Each round starts from a stronger place.

He also talks about two paths after any program.

The first path: you see great results, you stop doing what got you there, the habits slip and the weight comes back.

The second path: you keep building on the foundation you've created.

We built our coaching around the second one.

After the first 8 weeks, many women continue into Metabolic Mastery, our ongoing coaching, to keep building. Some of the women we coach have been with us for two and three years.

How long does it take to change for good?

The first change usually comes fast. We've helped 1,000+ women lose 10 to 20 lbs of fat in 8 weeks.

Keeping it is a longer game, and that's where the real change happens.

What you learn in those first 8 weeks, how to eat, how to train and how to recover for the body you have now, is yours to keep either way.

If the problem has always been sticking with it past the first few weeks, read how to stick with it past week 3.

Sari kept going

I sat down with Sari, a 44-year-old mom of two, about her 5-month transformation and the simple strategies that helped her build strength and set herself up for long-term success, no matter how busy life gets.

Ready for a plan with a second chapter?

You already know how to lose it.

Let's make this the last time you have to.

Start with the short video on our homepage at fortyfwd.com. It walks through why your body stopped responding after 40 and the method we use to change that.

If it sounds like you, apply for a call with Chris.

He reads every application himself. On the call, he'll look at what you've tried before, what happened after, and tell you straight whether the program is the right fit. If it is, he walks you through the investment then, once you both know it's a fit.

Lose it once.

Keep it this time.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I always gain the weight back after a diet?

Strict diets are hard to live with, they tend to cost you muscle, and they end with no plan for what comes next. When the diet stops, the old habits come back, and the weight follows.

How do I keep fat off after losing it?

Eat in a way you'd happily keep, keep strength training so you hold on to muscle, and move into a build phase instead of stopping completely.

Is it harder to keep weight off after 40?

In our experience, it's harder when you're losing muscle, which happens after 40 unless you give it a reason to stay. Strength training and enough protein make the biggest difference.

What happens after the 8-week program?

Many women continue into Metabolic Mastery, our ongoing coaching, where the training moves into build phases. What you learn in the 8 weeks is yours to keep either way.

Do I have to diet forever to keep it off?

No. There's no calorie counting, and your favourite foods stay in. The goal is a way of eating you'd keep even if nobody was watching.
