Why do I crash at 3 or 4 p.m. and snack until dinner? What should I eat instead?

Usually because you didn't eat enough earlier in the day. Coffee for breakfast and a light lunch only go so far, so around 3 or 4 your energy drops and the grazing starts. In our experience, more protein at breakfast and lunch, plus one planned snack that pairs protein with a carb or fat, tends to settle it.

The 4 o'clock crash usually starts at breakfast.

So that's where we fix it.

Why do I crash in the afternoon?

I hear some version of this every week.

Energy drops around 3 or 4. Then the snacking starts, and it runs straight through to dinner. Some women call it their witching hour.

Here's what's usually behind it:

  • Breakfast was coffee. Maybe a bar on the way out the door.
  • Lunch was light. A salad without much protein, eaten at your desk.
  • The gap was long. Five or six hours on very little food.
  • The day was full. Meetings, school pickup, a hundred small decisions. By 4, the tank is empty.

A lot of the women we coach tell us the afternoon dip got harder to push through in their 40s.

In our experience, the fix almost always starts earlier in the day.

Is afternoon snacking bad for fat loss?

No. A planned snack is part of the plan.

What we work on is grazing. A handful of crackers, a few bites of the kids' snack, another coffee, a square of chocolate. Some women tell us they end up eating more snacks than meals.

Here's the thing.

When your meals are big enough, you usually need less snacking. Our coaches would much rather you eat a real lunch than graze for three hours.

And if you're truly hungry at 4?

Eat. Please don't white-knuckle it until dinner.

Most women come to us wanting to lose weight. What they actually want to lose is fat. And in our experience, a body that runs on empty all afternoon makes that a lot harder.

What should I eat at 3 p.m. instead?

Pair a protein with a carb or a fat.

In our experience, that combination carries you to dinner much better than something sweet on its own. Vegetables by themselves are great filler. They just won't hold you for long.

A few of our coaches' go-to snacks:

  • Leftover chicken and crunchy vegetables. Cucumber, peppers, whatever's in the fridge.
  • Smoked salmon and cucumber.
  • Tuna on a rice cake.
  • Hard-boiled eggs and a piece of fruit.

During the first 14 days, the plan is lower carb and higher protein, so your coach will help you pick the ones that fit. After that, more foods come back.

Chris has a line for this: "The rinky-dink stuff matters." A snack you planned at 9 a.m. is exactly that kind of small thing. It's a lot easier to make that choice in the morning than at 4 o'clock with an empty tank.

How do I stop the crash before it starts?

You move more of your food earlier in the day.

  • Protein at breakfast. Eggs, leftovers, cottage cheese once dairy is back. Keep your coffee, and put food beside it. Here's what you can put in your coffee.
  • A real lunch. Protein, vegetables and some carbs. Your coach uses simple hand-size portions, so there's nothing to count or weigh.
  • Have the snack ready. If 3 or 4 is your crash time, pack the snack before the day starts.
  • Water through the afternoon. It's easy to forget when you're running on coffee.

Not sure whether you're eating enough? Here's how to tell if you're eating too little to lose fat.

What if I'm snacking because I'm tired?

That's real too.

The late afternoon is often the most stretched part of your day. Work is wrapping up, the kids are home and dinner isn't started.

Before you open the pantry, check in with yourself:

  • Did I eat enough today? Often, this alone answers it.
  • Am I hungry, or am I fried? If you're fried, a five-minute walk, a glass of water or a few minutes outside can help.
  • Is this my planned snack, or a handful on the way past?

No guilt either way. Get curious, tell your coach what you notice, and she'll adjust the plan with you.

If the snacking carries on all evening, read why you end up in the pantry at night.

When should I talk to my doctor about the afternoon crash?

If the crash comes with dizziness, shakiness or feeling faint, or you manage a blood sugar condition, check with your doctor. The same goes if you're exhausted no matter how well you eat or sleep.

We coach the food and training side. Your coach will build your plan around anything your doctor tells you.

How does a coach help with the afternoon slump?

  • She sees the pattern. At your weekly check-in, she looks at what your day of eating really looks like, 4 o'clock included.
  • Your snacks fit your schedule. Your plan is built around when you actually get hungry, from school pickup to late meetings.
  • The plan adjusts. Still crashing? She moves food earlier or changes what's in your snack.

We've helped 1,000+ women lose 10 to 20 lbs of fat in 8 weeks. Plenty of them started with the same 4 o'clock crash.

Ready to get your afternoons back?

You don't need more willpower at 4 p.m.

You need more food at 8 a.m.

Start with the short video on our homepage at fortyfwd.com. It walks through why your body stopped responding after 40 and the method we use to change that.

If it sounds like you, apply for a call with Chris.

He reads every application himself. On the call, he'll look at what your day of eating looks like now, afternoon crash included, and tell you straight whether the program is the right fit. If it is, he walks you through the investment then, once you both know it's a fit.

Eat earlier.

Plan the snack.

Let's make 4 o'clock boring again.
