Is stress and cortisol why I can't lose belly fat?
Stress can play a part, but it rarely acts alone. In our experience, when stress, short sleep and under-eating pile up, fat loss gets a lot harder, especially around the middle. What helps is calmer basics: eating enough, training earlier in the day, protecting your sleep, walking more and dropping the punishing extra workouts.
You're not imagining the stress.
You're not imagining the belly, either.
Here's how they tend to connect, and what we actually do about it.
What does cortisol have to do with belly fat?
Your feed probably blames cortisol for everything right now.
Here's our honest take.
Cortisol is one of your body's stress hormones. You need it. It helps you get up in the morning and handle a busy day.
How much it has to do with your belly specifically is a question for researchers and your doctor. What we can speak to is what we see in our coaching.
When a woman is stressed, sleeping badly and barely eating, fat loss tends to stall. And the middle is usually the last place to budge.
So in our experience, stress is one piece of a bigger picture. Shifting hormones and quiet muscle loss tend to be part of it, too. We break that down in why belly fat shows up in perimenopause even when nothing changed.
When is stress a conversation for your doctor?
We coach. We don't diagnose.
If stress, anxiety or low mood feel heavy, if they've lasted for weeks, or if they're getting in the way of your sleep and your days, please talk to your doctor.
That conversation matters, and you deserve to have it.
The habits below help either way. They just don't replace it.
What does stress actually look like in a real week?
A lot of the women we talk to tell us they're living in fight-or-flight.
Teenagers on one side. Aging parents on the other. A big job in the middle.
Here's the stress stack we see most often:
- The mental load. The job, the inbox, the email you answer at 9pm.
- Caring for everyone. Kids, parents, partners, the dog. Everyone gets looked after except you.
- Under-eating. Coffee for breakfast, a salad at your desk, dinner standing up. In our experience, your body treats too little food as one more stressor.
- Short, broken sleep. Late nights, early mornings and wake-ups in between.
- Punishing workouts on top. The extra spin class or the late-night session to "make up" for the day.
Here's the thing.
You can't always change the first two.
The last three are where we start.
If you're running on empty as well, read why you're tired all the time, even with sleep.
Can a supplement or a detox tea fix it?
Can we please stop pretending a detox tea or a powder fixes stress?
There's a drink, a tea or a supplement stack for every stress hormone you've ever heard of.
And a lot of the women we talk to tell us the same thing. Cortisol, insulin, thyroid, this supplement, that supplement. It all just feels overwhelming.
We get it.
Here's what we've seen in years of coaching women over 40. Nothing in a bottle does what eating enough, sleeping better, training smarter and walking more can do.
That's less exciting to sell. It also works.
What actually helps with stress and belly fat?
Most women come to us wanting to lose weight. What they actually want to lose is fat.
And when life is this full, the plan has to lower the pressure on your body instead of adding to it.
Here's what we coach:
- Eat enough, starting at breakfast. Real meals with protein at each one. Most of the women we meet are eating far less than they think, and in our experience, feeding your body properly is one of the first things that calms everything down.
- Train earlier in the day. If your workouts happen late at night, try moving them to the morning or midday. Chris explains it like this: on a day you can't get a morning workout in, he'd rather you go for a walk than train hard late at night. We go deeper in does working out at night wreck your sleep and fat loss.
- Protect your sleep. A real wind-down, the same wake-up time every day, the last drink well before bed. If 2am is your nemesis, start with why you wake up at 2am, and what helps.
- Walk more. Recovery is free. It's also the thing most of us skip. A walk after dinner, a walk between meetings, a walk instead of a late workout.
- Fewer, smarter workouts. Chris calls random, punishing workouts the "vomit of exercise." We trade them for steady strength training that gives your body a reason to keep its muscle.
No gimmicks.
Just the basics, done consistently, with someone in your corner.
How does coaching help when life is this stressful?
You already have enough decisions to make.
Your plan shouldn't be one more.
Chris says it all the time: "You don't cut your own hair. Why design your own nutrition plan?"
Here's what you get with us:
- One plan, built around your real week. Your coach builds your nutrition around your schedule and the foods you actually enjoy. No calorie counting. No food scales.
- A coach who's been there. Every coach is a woman over 40 who has done the Reset herself. Weekly check-ins, plus direct access between them.
- Workouts that fit your morning. Follow-along videos at home, about 50 minutes, with a set of dumbbells, a Swiss ball and fabric bands. No drive to the gym.
- A plan that bends on hard weeks. Sick parent, work deadline, no sleep? Your coach adjusts the plan with you so you don't have to start over.
We've helped 1,000+ women lose 10 to 20 lbs of fat in 8 weeks. Plenty of them came to us stressed, stretched thin and sure their body had stopped listening.
Michelle knows the overwhelm
I sat down with Michelle, a busy mom and business owner, to talk about how moms can put their own health on the list, manage the chaos and break the cycle of overwhelm.
You're carrying a lot
You don't have to carry this part alone.
Start with the short video on our homepage at fortyfwd.com. It walks through why your body stopped responding after 40 and the method we use to change that.
If it sounds like you, apply for a call with Chris.
He reads every application himself. On the call, he'll look at what your weeks really look like and tell you straight whether the program is the right fit. If it is, he walks you through the investment then, once you both know it's a fit.
Less pressure on your body.
Better results from it.
Let's start there.
Frequently asked questions
Can stress make it harder to lose weight around my belly?
In our experience, yes. When stress, short sleep and under-eating pile up, fat loss tends to get a lot harder, especially around the middle.
Do supplements or detox teas help with stress and belly fat?
We don't build our coaching around them. What we've seen help is eating enough, training earlier in the day, sleeping better, walking more and cutting the punishing extra workouts.
Should I work out at night if that's my only free time?
If you can, try moving your training earlier in the day. For a lot of the women we coach, late-night hard workouts tend to get in the way of sleep, and on days a morning session isn't possible, a walk is a good swap.
Can eating too little be stressful for my body?
In our experience, yes. Your body tends to treat too little food as one more stressor, which is why we start by making sure you're eating enough, especially protein.
When should I talk to my doctor about stress?
If stress, anxiety or low mood feel heavy, last for weeks, or get in the way of your sleep and daily life, please talk to your doctor. We coach, and we don't diagnose.
