Article: Why am I gaining belly fat in perimenopause when nothing about my diet or workouts changed?

Sari, a Forty Forward client, on losing belly fat in perimenopause

Why am I gaining belly fat in perimenopause when nothing about my diet or workouts changed?

Because your body changed, even though your habits didn't. In perimenopause, shifting hormones make your body more likely to store fat around your middle, and you lose muscle unless you give it a reason to stay. The routine that worked at 30 was built for a different body. What works now: strength training, enough protein and food, and better sleep.

So no, you're not imagining it.

And you didn't suddenly lose your discipline.

Here's what's actually going on, and what we do about it with the women we coach.

One quick word on the scale first.

Most women come to us wanting to lose weight. What they actually want to lose is fat, so that's what this page is about.

What's actually changing in your body?

I get asked this question all the time.

The women who ask it are usually the most consistent people I know. Same breakfast. Same workouts. Same bedtime, more or less.

And still, the middle keeps growing.

Here's the thing. Three things shift in perimenopause, and they stack on top of each other:

  • Your hormones are moving. As estrogen rises and falls through perimenopause, your body tends to change where it stores fat. For most of the women we coach, the midsection is where it shows up first.
  • You're quietly losing muscle. As we get older, muscle slips away unless we give it a reason to stay. Less muscle means a smaller engine, so the same food lands differently than it did ten years ago.
  • Sleep and stress get louder. Night wake-ups, a packed calendar, kids, aging parents. In our experience, when sleep falls apart, cravings climb and fat loss gets a lot harder.

Same habits.

Different body.

That's the whole mystery.

Why does it go straight to my belly?

Because that's where the hormonal shift tends to show up for women in this stage of life.

A lot of the women we coach tell us everything else feels like it's shrinking while their stomach keeps growing. Some say it feels like a tire around the middle that was never there before.

It's frustrating. It's also really common.

Why that matters: belly fat in your 40s is a signal that your body needs a different approach. It says nothing about your willpower.

And just so you know, a hundred crunches a day won't fix it. You can't spot-reduce fat from one area. You change your body composition as a whole, and the middle comes along with it.

Why isn't the old playbook working anymore?

When the middle starts growing, most of us reach for the same two tools.

Eat less.

Do more cardio.

I did it too. I hit my 40s and nothing dramatic changed. I wasn't eating worse. I wasn't training less. But the weight started coming on anyway. And the more frustrated I got, the harder I pushed, and it made things worse.

Here's why.

Eating less backfires. When you eat too little, your body reads it as a threat. So it slows down, holds on to fat, and gives up muscle first. That's the exact muscle you need to change your shape.

More cardio piles on. Chris explains it like this: long runs, spin and the elliptical burn calories in the moment, but they don't give your body a reason to keep muscle. Stack them on a stressed, under-fed body and, in our experience, you end up tired, hungry and right where you started. Working out 4 to 5 times a week and still stuck? Start with the three things we check first.

So if you've been blaming yourself, you can stop.

That strategy was built for a body you don't live in anymore.

So what actually works for belly fat in perimenopause?

The good news? The fix is simpler than the last ten things you tried.

Here's what we build every client's plan around:

  • Strength training comes first. Chris calls resistance training "the foundation and heartbeat" of what we do. Lifting gives your muscle a reason to stay, and muscle is what keeps your metabolism working for you. You can do it at home with a set of dumbbells.
  • You eat enough, especially protein. Most women come to us eating too little. Your coach builds a personalized plan around your schedule and the foods you actually enjoy. No calorie counting. No food scales.
  • Sleep is part of the plan. Recovery is when your body rebuilds. We look at when you train, how you wind down and what's waking you up at night.
  • Fewer, smarter workouts. Not more. We cut the punishing extras so your body can respond to the training that counts.

And yes, your favourite foods stay. Wine nights too.

Life has real food and real events. A plan that ignores that doesn't last.

How long does it take to see a change?

Our program runs 8 weeks to start, and it's built for exactly this stage of life.

We've helped 1,000+ women lose 10 to 20 lbs of fat in 8 weeks.

Here's what we tell every woman on day one, though. Watch how your clothes fit, how your energy feels and what you see in the mirror, not just the scale. When you're building muscle and losing fat at the same time, the scale is the slowest thing to catch up.

The first change most women notice? Energy. Then their waistband.

You're not broken, and you're not too late

If you take one thing from this page, let it be this.

Your body is asking for something different. That's all this is.

You don't need perfect hormones to start. You need a method that works with the hormones you have right now.

Sari, a 44-year-old mom of two, spent decades caught up in diet culture and fitness myths. In her conversation with me, she shares how strength training and sleep helped her build strength, shed inches and feel confident in her own skin again.

Start with the short video on our homepage at fortyfwd.com. It walks through why your body stopped responding after 40 and the exact method we use to turn it around.

If it sounds like you, apply for a call with Chris.

He reads every application himself. On the call, he'll tell you straight whether the program is the right fit for you. If it is, he walks you through the investment then, once you both know it's a fit.

Your body changed. Your plan can too.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it so hard to lose weight in perimenopause?

Because your body is losing muscle and storing more fat around your middle at the same time, so eating less and adding cardio stops working. The scale can't tell fat from muscle either. Strength training, enough protein and better sleep change what you're actually made of.

Is belly fat in perimenopause just part of getting older?

It's common, and it's changeable. Strength training, eating enough protein and better sleep change body composition at any age, and we coach women from 35 through perimenopause and beyond.

Will crunches get rid of belly fat?

No. You can't spot-reduce fat from one area. Full-body strength training and the right nutrition change your body composition as a whole, and your middle changes with it.

Do I need hormone therapy to lose belly fat?

That's a decision for you and your doctor, and we never tell anyone to start or stop a medication. What we coach is the foundation, strength, protein, sleep and recovery, and in our experience it matters whether or not you're on HRT.

Do I have to count calories or cut out my favourite foods?

No. There's no calorie counting and no food scales. Your coach builds a personalized plan around the foods you enjoy and the life you actually live.

How fast will I see a difference?

Most women notice their energy first and their clothes next. We've helped 1,000+ women lose 10 to 20 lbs of fat in 8 weeks.
