What's the best protein powder for women over 40? Whey bothers my stomach.
The best protein powder is the one your stomach agrees with, and plenty of women over 40 don't need one at all. Real food comes first. If whey bothers you, there are other kinds, like beef protein or a plant protein. Look for one that's third-party tested, and your coach helps you choose.
No brand to memorize.
No shake you have to plug your nose to get down.
Just a better fit for your body.
Do I even need protein powder?
No.
Protein powder is optional. Whole foods come first.
What matters is protein at every meal, starting at breakfast. Eggs, chicken, fish, turkey, beef. Real food you already know how to cook.
Here's how much protein you actually need, and how to get it from food.
Chris says it simply: "Muscle is metabolism."
Protein helps you hold on to muscle while you strength train, and that protein can come from your plate. A powder is a backup for the busy days, when it's a shake or nothing.
If you can't stand the stuff, that's completely fine. Your plan can be built without it.
Why does whey bother my stomach?
Hey ladies, listen up.
You're not the only one.
A lot of the women we talk to tell us some version of the same story:
- "Whey just doesn't sit well." Bloated, crampy, or running to the bathroom after a shake.
- "I switched to a plant one, but I've heard it's not as good." So they feel like they're settling.
- "I plug my nose and get it down." Every single morning.
Here's the thing.
Whey comes from milk. It's one of the proteins in dairy. So if dairy and your stomach don't always get along, whey might not either.
We don't diagnose. If your stomach reacts to a lot of foods, you think you have an allergy, or it's getting worse, that's a conversation for your doctor. And if your doctor has ever given you a protein limit, follow your doctor. Your coach builds around it.
What kinds of protein powder are there?
More than the one on the end of the aisle.
Here are the main kinds our coaches talk through:
- Whey. Made from milk. Plenty of women do fine with it. In our program, it waits out the first 14 days, because that's when we take a short break from dairy. After that, it can come back if your stomach agrees.
- Beef protein. Made from beef, so there's no dairy in it. It's often the one our coaches suggest during the first 14 days, and for women whose stomachs don't like whey.
- Plant protein. A good option if you don't eat animal foods or dairy doesn't work for you. It's a little less complete, so you may need a bit more of it to do the same job. Your coach helps you figure out how much.
- Collagen. It's technically not a complete protein, so we wouldn't make it your main source.
Don't eat meat? Your coach builds around your actual kitchen. Here's more on getting enough protein without meat.
How do I choose a good one?
You'll notice there are no brand names on this page.
That's on purpose. The right powder depends on your stomach, how you eat, and where you are in your plan. So instead of a brand, here's what to look for:
- Start with your stomach. If one kind bothers you, try a different kind. Switching flavours of the same powder usually isn't enough.
- Look for third-party tested. That means an outside company has checked that what's in the tub matches the label.
- Read the label. A short ingredient list and little or no added sugar. If certain sweeteners bother you, check for those too.
- Ask your coach. She knows your plan, your phase and your goals, and she helps you choose.
That's it.
The most expensive tub won't do more for you. Neither will the one with the loudest ads.
The best one is the one you'll actually use, that doesn't wreck your afternoon.
How do I use it without living on shakes?
Think of powder as a helper, never the main event.
A few ways the women we coach use it:
- The rushed morning. When the other choice is a coffee and nothing else until noon.
- Before an early workout. A little protein before you train, then a real breakfast after.
- Stirred into food. Some women would rather eat it than drink it. Your coach can help you work it into a meal.
Then it's back to real food.
Tired of the same chicken every night? Here are easy ways to change up your protein.
Will a protein powder help me lose fat?
On its own, no.
Most women come to us wanting to lose weight. What they actually want to lose is fat.
That comes from strength training that progresses, enough protein at every meal, eating enough overall, sleep, and showing up week after week. A powder can make the protein part easier on a busy day. It doesn't do the rest.
We've helped 1,000+ women lose 10 to 20 lbs of fat in 8 weeks. Those results came from training, real food and coaching.
Ready for a plan that works with your stomach?
You don't have to keep buying tubs and hoping.

If it sounds like you, apply for a call with Chris.
He reads every application himself. On the call, he'll look at how you're eating right now and tell you straight whether the program is the right fit. If it is, he walks you through the investment then, once you both know it's a fit.
Real food first.
A powder only if it helps.
And someone in your corner to help you choose.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best protein powder for weight loss after 40?
The one your stomach agrees with and you'll actually use, ideally third-party tested. A powder doesn't cause fat loss on its own; strength training, protein at every meal, enough food and sleep do the heavy lifting.
What protein powder can I use if whey upsets my stomach?
Other kinds exist, like beef protein or a plant protein. If your stomach reacts to a lot of foods, check with your doctor, and your coach helps you choose one that fits your plan.
Is plant protein as good as whey?
It's a good option, especially if you don't eat dairy or animal foods. It's a little less complete, so you may need a bit more of it, and your coach helps you figure out how much.
Do I need protein powder to build muscle after 40?
No. Protein powder is optional and whole foods come first. Plenty of women build muscle with real food, strength training and enough sleep.
Can I have whey during the first 14 days?
In our program, whey waits until after the first 14 days, because that's when we take a short break from dairy. After that, it can come back if it agrees with you.
