Article: I think I'm insulin resistant (or I've been told I have fatty liver). Can I still lose fat?

I think I'm insulin resistant (or I've been told I have fatty liver). Can I still lose fat?

Yes. Your doctor leads on any diagnosis, testing and medication. We coach the daily side around their plan: strength training, a real-food nutrition plan that starts with 14 days of lower carb, higher protein eating, and a coach who adjusts as you go. Only suspect it? Start with your doctor.

A diagnosis, or even a hunch, changes how you plan.

It doesn't have to mean you stop.

And you're far from the only woman asking.

First, when should you talk to your doctor?

We coach. We don't diagnose, test for or treat insulin resistance, fatty liver or any other condition.

Talk to your doctor first if:

  • You think you might be insulin resistant. A feeling, an article or a quiz online can't tell you. Your doctor can.
  • You've been told you have insulin resistance or fatty liver. Ask what they want you to focus on, and what they'd like you to avoid.
  • You take any medication. For blood sugar or anything else. Your doctor leads on what you take, how much and when.
  • Something changes. New results, new symptoms or a new prescription.

We never tell anyone to start, stop or change a medication.

Not your dose. Not your timing. Not your treatment.

What we ask is simple. Bring what your doctor tells you to us. If they've given you food guidance or limits, your coach builds the plan around them.

Want to get more out of that appointment? Here's what to ask when your bloodwork comes back normal.

Can you lose fat if you're insulin resistant?

A lot of the women we talk to bring this up on their first call.

Some have read about it and think it sounds like them. Some have been trying to manage it on their own. Some just got a diagnosis and want to do something about it, now.

All fair.

Your doctor is the right person to tell you what's realistic for your health.

What we can tell you is what we coach: the parts of fat loss that happen in your kitchen, in your workouts and in how you recover.

Most women come to us wanting to lose weight. What they actually want to lose is fat.

We've helped 1,000+ women lose 10 to 20 lbs of fat in 8 weeks. Every woman starts from a different place, and with a diagnosis in the mix, that's even more true. That's why Chris looks at every situation individually before anyone joins.

What does the food side look like?

Here's how the nutrition plan works, built around whatever your doctor has told you:

  • The first 14 days. Lower carb and higher protein, with a short break from alcohol, dairy, gluten and processed sugar.
  • Then foods come back. One at a time, so you can see what your body actually responds to. More on that in do I have to cut carbs?
  • Regular meals with protein. Starting with breakfast. No skipping meals to "save up."
  • No counting. No calorie counting, no food scales and no macro tracking. Real food and the hand method.

And the most important line on this page.

If your doctor or dietitian has given you food guidance, follow their lead. Tell your coach on day one, and she builds your plan around it.

Your doctor's instructions always come first.

Should you try fasting to manage it?

Some of the women we talk to have been leaning into fasting on their own, hoping it would help.

Here's the thing.

That's a medical question, and it belongs with your doctor.

What we can tell you is how we coach. In our experience, skipping meals is usually not the best fit for active women over 40 who strength train, so we coach regular meals, starting with breakfast. Here's our full take on intermittent fasting.

If your doctor has given you a specific eating schedule, follow it. Your coach will work with it.

What about training?

This part doesn't change with a diagnosis.

Chris calls resistance training "the foundation and heartbeat" of everything we do.

Within what your doctor has cleared, here's how the workouts work:

  • Strength training at home. Follow-along video workouts, about 50 minutes, with a set of dumbbells, a Swiss ball and some fabric bands.
  • 5 workouts a week in the Reset. 3 strength and 2 conditioning, and one of the conditioning days is optional.
  • Every move has an easier option. You start where your body is and build from there.
  • You're never guessing. I'm on camera doing every workout with you, and Chris coaches the form in real time.

If your doctor has given you any limits on exercise, tell your coach. She works within them.

Where does your coach fit in?

Your doctor handles the diagnosis and the treatment.

Your coach handles everything around it:

  • A check-in every two weeks. Plus direct access between them.
  • A plan that adjusts. As your body responds, and as your doctor's advice changes.
  • A woman over 40 in your corner. She's done the Reset herself.

Chris has one line for every woman who joins: "All we want from you is communication."

New results from your doctor? Tell your coach. A new prescription? Tell your coach.

We'll build around it.

Ready to get organized around it?

You don't need to figure this out alone.

And you don't need to choose between your doctor and a plan that actually fits your life.

Start with the short video on our homepage at fortyfwd.com. It walks through why your body stopped responding after 40 and the method we use to change that.

If it sounds like you, apply for a call with Chris.

He reads every application himself. On the call, he'll ask what your doctor has told you so far, look at where you're starting, and tell you straight whether the program is the right fit. If it is, he walks you through the investment then, once you both know it's a fit.

Your doctor leads.

We'll coach everything around it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you lose weight if you're insulin resistant?

Yes. Your doctor leads on the diagnosis and any medication, and we coach strength training, a real-food nutrition plan and recovery around their plan.

Is a low-carb diet good for insulin resistance?

That's a question for your doctor. Our plan starts with 14 days of lower carb, higher protein eating, then carbs come back, and if your doctor has given you different food guidance, your coach builds the plan around it.

Can I lose weight with fatty liver?

Talk to your doctor first; they lead on the diagnosis and treatment. Within what they've told you, we coach the food, training and recovery side.

How do I know if I'm insulin resistant?

Only your doctor can tell you. Ask them, rather than going by a feeling, an article or a quiz online.

Will you tell me to change my medication?

Never. We don't start, stop or change any medication. Your doctor leads on all of it, and your coach builds your plan around what they say.
