Article: What can I do about loose skin on my arms and stomach after 40?

What can I do about loose skin on my arms and stomach after 40?

Here's the honest answer. Strength training and fat loss change how your arms and stomach look, often a lot. Building muscle underneath and losing fat on top gives you a firmer shape. Skin is skin, though, and no workout or food tightens it. If loose skin bothers you, a doctor or dermatologist is the right person to ask.

You deserve a straight answer.

Here it is, kindly.

Why does skin change in our 40s?

You're not imagining it.

A lot of the women we talk to notice it somewhere in their 40s or 50s:

  • Arms that feel softer than they used to, even when they're strong.
  • A pouch on the stomach that's been there since the kids, or since a big weight change.
  • Texture that changed. Some women tell us that one day their skin just looked different, and it made them feel older overnight.
  • After a big loss. Women who've lost a lot sometimes have skin that didn't follow along.

All of that is normal.

It's also okay to wish it were different.

What can strength training and fat loss actually change?

More than most women expect.

Here's what tends to change when you build muscle and lose fat at the same time:

  • Your shape. Muscle under the skin gives your arms, legs and back a firmer, more defined look.
  • How your clothes fit. Sleeves, waistbands and jeans often tell you first.
  • Your strength. Carrying groceries, lifting a suitcase, getting up off the floor.
  • How you feel in your body. A lot of the women we coach say this is the part that surprised them most.

Chris calls the goal shrink wrap. Leaner, firmer, stronger, and still you.

Most women come to us wanting to lose weight. What they actually want to lose is fat.

And keeping and building muscle while you lose it is what changes your shape. Here's more on toning your arms and back after 40.

What can't training change?

The skin itself.

Here's the thing.

No workout, food, cream or supplement tightens loose skin, and we won't pretend otherwise. You've probably seen plenty of those promises already. Right?

If loose skin bothers you, the right person to ask is your doctor or a dermatologist. They can talk you through your options for your skin and your health.

We coach strength, food and recovery. We don't give cosmetic or medical advice, and we won't comment on procedures. That conversation belongs with them.

How do I judge my progress if one spot won't change?

This is where it gets better.

One of the women we coach, who'd lost a lot, put it beautifully: she decided to judge her results on what could change, not on the one spot that wouldn't.

That's the mindset we coach:

  • Watch your arms and legs. Firmer, stronger, more defined.
  • Watch your strength numbers. Heavier dumbbells, more reps, moves you couldn't do in week 1.
  • Watch your clothes. The fit tells you a lot more than one spot.
  • Watch how you feel. Energy, confidence, how you carry yourself.

One stubborn spot isn't the scorecard.

It's one spot.

If the scale isn't telling the full story either, read the scale isn't moving but my clothes fit better.

What does the plan look like?

The same foundation every woman gets, built around you, in our 8-week 35+ Metabolic Reset:

  • Strength training at home. Follow-along video workouts, about 50 minutes, 4 a week. A set of dumbbells, a Swiss ball and fabric bands.
  • Enough food, built around protein. Real food. No calorie counting, no food scales.
  • Recovery that counts. Sleep and rest days are part of the plan.
  • A coach who's been there. A PN-certified coach, a woman over 40 who has done the Reset herself. A check-in every week, plus direct access between them.

We've helped 1,000+ women lose 10 to 20 lbs of fat in 8 weeks.

Plenty of them came to us worried about one part of their body, and left talking about how strong they felt.

Is it okay to still care about how I look?

Of course it is.

Wanting to feel good in your arms in a summer top is a completely reasonable thing to want. So is wanting to feel strong at 70.

Nobody here is going to tell you to fix your flaws. You don't have any that need fixing.

We'll just help you build the strongest version of the body you have.

Ready to build what's underneath?

You can't change your skin in a workout.

You can change a lot of what's under it.

Start with the short video on our homepage at fortyfwd.com. It walks through why your body stopped responding after 40 and the method we use to change that.

If it sounds like you, apply for a call with Chris.

He reads every application himself. On the call, he'll ask what you're hoping to change and tell you straight whether the program is the right fit. If it is, he walks you through the investment then, once you both know it's a fit.

Stronger arms.

A firmer shape.

And a lot more confidence in both.

Frequently asked questions

Can strength training tighten loose skin?

No workout tightens skin itself. Strength training and fat loss change your shape a lot, because muscle underneath gives you a firmer look, but for the skin itself, ask your doctor or a dermatologist.

Will I have loose skin if I lose weight after 40?

It depends on you, and it's a question for your doctor or a dermatologist. What we coach is building muscle while you lose fat, which changes your shape and how your clothes fit.

Can collagen or creams fix loose skin?

We don't recommend any product for skin. Cosmetic questions belong with your doctor or a dermatologist.

How do I tone my arms after 40?

Strength training that gets a little harder over the weeks, plus enough food and protein to build muscle while you lose fat overall. Spot reduction doesn't work, but stronger arms show as overall fat comes down.

How should I measure progress if one area won't change?

Judge your results on what can change: strength, how your clothes fit, your arms and legs, and how you feel. One stubborn spot isn't the scorecard.
