How do I eat out at restaurants and still lose fat?
Build your plate in order: protein first, then vegetables, then carbs. Ask how things are cooked, get sauces and dressings on the side, and decide ahead of time what you'll enjoy. Then actually enjoy the meal. In our experience, the meals you eat most days decide your results, and a restaurant dinner fits right inside them.
You don't have to skip the dinner.
You don't have to order the sad salad.
You just need a simple way to order.
Why does eating out feel so hard when you're trying to lose fat?
Because at a restaurant, someone else is in charge of the kitchen.
Here's what a lot of the women we talk to run into:
- You can't see what goes in. The oil in the pan, the butter on the vegetables, the dressing on the "healthy" bowl.
- The portions are big. Often a lot bigger than what you'd serve yourself at home.
- The menu feels like a test. And the one answer that feels safe, salad with chicken, gets old fast.
- It's social. A work dinner, a girls' night, a birthday. Nobody wants to be the one asking twenty questions.
So a lot of women do one of two things. Skip the dinner, or eat almost nothing all day to "save up" for it.
Both tend to backfire. Skipping it means missing your life. Saving up means arriving starving, and the bread basket wins.
What should I order?
Build your plate in three steps.
We use the Precision Nutrition hand method, so you don't need an app or a scale. Your hand comes with you to the restaurant.
- Protein first. A palm-sized portion. Steak, fish, chicken, shrimp, or eggs at brunch.
- Vegetables next. A fist-sized portion, or more. Swapping the fries for vegetables or a side salad is an easy ask.
- Then carbs. A cupped handful. Potatoes, rice, the bread. Or skip them if the dessert is what you're really looking forward to.
That's it.
Most menus have something that fits. A steak with vegetables. Salmon with rice. A burger, with the bun or without it, and a side salad.
The portion is often bigger than your hand. You don't have to finish the plate. Ask for a box, share a side, or stop when you're satisfied.
For the full hand method, here's how to eat without counting calories after 40.
Where do the hidden extras hide?
Did you know the biggest surprise on a restaurant plate is usually the cooking fat?
In our experience, that's where restaurant meals pick up a lot of extra energy without anyone noticing. A few simple asks help:
- Ask how it's cooked. Grilled, roasted, baked and steamed are easy wins.
- Sauces and dressings on the side. You still get the flavour. You decide how much.
- Ask for light butter or oil. Most kitchens are happy to do it.
- Watch the "healthy" bowls and salads. With candied nuts, cheese and a creamy dressing, they can be one of the heaviest things on the menu.
Asking for any of this is a normal part of ordering dinner.
Should I look at the menu before I go?
If it helps you relax, yes.
A quick look means you're not deciding at the table when you're hungry and distracted. A lot of the women we coach send a photo of the menu to their coach between check-ins and ask, "What would you order?" That's exactly what she's there for.
But if checking every menu starts to feel like a part-time job, tell your coach. That's a sign your plan is too strict for your life, and she'll loosen it.
What about drinks, bread and dessert?
Here's the thing. You get to choose.
- Drinks. Finish your last one at least 3 hours before bed, and try soda water with lime when you want to skip a round. Here's how we handle wine nights.
- The bread basket. Is it worth it tonight? Then have a piece and enjoy it. If not, ask them to take it away.
- Dessert. Share it, or have your own. Have it with intention, then move on.
- The rest of your day. Protein at breakfast and lunch, so you walk in hungry instead of starving.
I eat out a lot for work. Does that change anything?
It changes the plan. Your coach builds around it.
Client dinners twice a week, conferences, travel. That's real life for a lot of the women we coach, and your coach plans your week with those meals already in it.
Most women come to us wanting to lose weight. What they actually want to lose is fat.
And fat loss comes from what you do most days. When a restaurant meal is a regular part of your week, it has to be part of the plan instead of an exception to it.
We've helped 1,000+ women lose 10 to 20 lbs of fat in 8 weeks. A lot of them eat out every single week.
If you're eating out because you're on the road, here's how to travel without undoing your progress.
Why does enjoying the meal matter so much?
Because dinner out is about more than the food.
It's your anniversary. It's catching up with your oldest friend. It's the table where your family finally sits still for an hour.
Our coaches say it all the time. When you go out with the people who matter to you, enjoy the time and make the memories.
Order well.
Then put the fork down, look up, and be there.

If it sounds like you, apply for a call with Chris.
He reads every application himself. On the call, he'll look at how often you eat out, for work and for fun, and tell you straight whether the program is the right fit. If it is, he walks you through the investment then, once you both know it's a fit.
Keep the reservation.
Order with a plan.
Enjoy the table.
Frequently asked questions
How do I eat out and still lose weight?
Build your plate in order: a palm of protein, a fist or more of vegetables, then a cupped handful of carbs if you want them. Ask how things are cooked, get sauces on the side, and enjoy the meal.
What is the best thing to order at a restaurant for fat loss?
A protein with vegetables is the easiest base, like steak, fish or chicken with a vegetable side. Then add the carb or the dessert you're actually looking forward to.
Should I eat less during the day if I'm going out for dinner?
No. Eat your normal breakfast and lunch with protein. Arriving starving usually means the bread basket wins.
Can I drink at dinner and still lose fat?
Yes. We suggest finishing your last drink at least 3 hours before bed, and soda water with lime when you want to skip a round.
What if I eat out several times a week for work?
Tell your coach. She builds those meals into your plan from the start, so a client dinner is part of the week instead of a setback.
